Lung Transplant Program

Georgia’s Only Lung Transplant Program

Emory Healthcare is home to Georgia’s only lung transplant program. When you or someone you love needs a lung transplant, receiving the highest level of care is essential. The Emory Lung Transplant Program provides innovative transplant therapies along with outstanding pre-and post-transplant care. Our program leads the way in clinical excellence.

Emory’s team of lung transplant doctors is highly skilled in caring for lung transplant surgery patients. A transplant surgeon will perform your surgery and supervise your care after surgery. The surgeon will also follow your progress after you leave the hospital.

Our first goal is to provide our patients with the unsurpassed, comprehensive care they deserve. We will work with you every step of the way throughout your transplant journey.

Commitment to Excellence

In 1993, Emory established the only lung transplant center in Georgia. Our primary mission is to serve Georgia residents who suffer from complex lung diseases. To date, Emory has completed over 500 lung transplants.

Our Lung Transplant Program has been named a Center of Excellence (COE) by Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. COE programs must meet strict standards that ensure the highest level of care. We are committed to delivering outstanding service and medical care to our patients. Our patients can trust us with their care because of our highly ranked survival outcomes.

Your Team of Specialists

Your lung transplant team includes:

  • Pulmonologists
  • Transplant surgeons
  • Cardiologists
  • Transplant coordinators
  • Specially trained nurses

We work together to provide superior care.

Organ Placement Program

The Emory Organ Placement Team is trained to review all organs that might be a match with our patients. This nursing team is on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to review donor offers with the transplant surgeon on call. Together with numerous organ donation organizations, our team of nurses is responsible for coordinating the transplant process from when the initial offer is received through calling a patient to the center for their transplant. If a patient is offered a possible transplant, one of our coordinators will be in contact.

Ongoing Transplant Research

Our commitment to research, education, and patient care is the key to our success. Our highly regarded team of doctors are leaders in lung transplant research. Their current studies include:

  • Transplant rejection
  • End-stage diseases of the blood vessel in the lungs
  • Experimental methods for effective gene therapy.

Support Before and After Surgery

Patient education and other resources are part of our care programs. For patients who travel to the region, we offer the Mason Guest House, a low-cost home-away-from-home.
